Valencia vs Barca in Guernsey - FA Cup
2/12/2012
0 - 1
They came, they saw, they conceded a lot of corners and yet, and yet, and yet............they emerged victorious. Lucky escape or tactical genius to draw Valencia onto us only to hit them with another ruthless counter attack on the 20 minute mark to score the only goal of the game? Whichever it was, it was an extraordinary game of football. The back four of Marcus Heaume, Ben Green, Liam Scholey and Connor Batiste deserve special mention and to paraphrase the great Winston Churchill..."never in the field of sporting endeavour, was so much owed by so many, to so few". They were simply immense as they repelled wave after wave of near relentless Valencia pressure. Coach Leigh-Morgan brought himself on to try and steady the ship with 25 to go, only for a tidal wave of attacks to rain down on goal. The growing band of Rangers supporters need not have worried as the back four, supported by an increasingly commanding Dominic O'Brien, stood firm.
The football may not have been pretty but conditions didn't lend itself to the slick passing that is our trademark. But what did stand out was the utter refusal to be beaten with bodies being hurled into last ditch tackles with the last few minutes of the game resembling the Alamo on a soggy December evening. But Barca almost always triumph over Valencia and so it was tonight. This fantastic group of likeable and increasingly resilient footballers are growing in confidence as they demonstrate yet again that they have it within them to out play, out think and out fight anyone on their day. A glorious night for all at Rangers.
Honourable mentions for all the back four, Dom O'Brien in goal and Ian de Cateret for his exocet of a shot to grab our vital goal but the Man of the Match goes to Ben Green for yet another increasingly assured performance.
Sylvans vs Barca in Guernsey
FA Cup
27/11/2011
1 - 4
We may have the comical name of Bailiffs Cross United but you simply can't keep the Barca out of Barca in Guernsey with Sylvans Veterans put to the sword by this increasingly confident and talented group of players. With Joe Bibby and Mike Walters putting the tiki in tiki taka and a mysterious and underrated new signing linking the slick passing from defence to midfield the near relentless possession that resulted forced Sylvans to chase shadows. They soon tired and were torn apart with some merciless counter attacking finding themselves 3 down with just 20 minutes gone and an increasingly confident Rangers threatening to run riot. Snatching an early 2nd half goal by Dan 'fox in the box' Robert gave Rangers a 4 - 0 cushion as we slipped into cruise control. A highly dubious penalty got 1 back for Sylvans but with Ben 'the rock' Green and Dave 'run through walls' Hall at the back there was never much chance of a fight back running out deserved winners 1 - 4 over a gracious Sylvans team.
Notable performances from Dan Robert and Ian 'Balotelli' de Carteret, but the Snickers man of the match (again) goes to Lewis Veron where the only noun possible left to do him justice is colossus.
Valencia await and Barca always beat Valencia.
u18s Vale Rec vs Rangers
16/11/2011
2 - 1
A narrow and undeserved loss for Guernsey's finest exponents of the beautiful game against a dangerous counter attacking Vale Rec. After playing some sublime possession football in the 1st half Rangers went in 0 - 0 at half time. Vale Rec took an early lead (where was the marking at the back post?) but this did little to disrupt the fine passing game Rangers have developed. A deserved equaliser came with 15 to go and chance after chance came and went including Fareed Anees running 60 yards, beating 3 players and hitting the side netting for what would have been goal of the season bar none. Rangers pressed, hassled and carved open Vale Rec but still the ball wouldn't go in the net......only it did. Ours. With a bitter twist, against the run of play a fine chipped shot lobbed Safe Hands O'Brien who had had an excellent game. 2 - 1. The crowd were stunned. The coach almost in tears. A fantastic game of football that could have easily finished 4 each. The Rec coach gracious enough at the end to admit we deserved to win...........and we will.
Joint men of the match to Marcus '2 lungs' Heaume and Theo 'Ledley King' Hannah. Notable performances from Jack Smith who danced around the Vale Rec midfield like the virtuoso game changer he's developing into. Lewis Veron in another Franco Baressi like performance and Joe Bibby and Mike Walters who put the tiki in tiki taka.
